Jorge Martinez
Squad number: 25
A Uruguay national, Jorge Martinez was born in Montevideo on the 5th April 1983. He plays mostly as a right wing but his offensive abilities saw him being fielded as a first or second striker on various occasions.
His career began in 2000 with Wanderers, a club from the capital city. During the following season, they won promotion to the First Division. After being transferred to Nacional in 2005/06, he won the championship during his first year with his new club. In Summer 2007 he moved to Europe. Various clubs were interested in him but Catania won the race. His first experience was positive: the player adapted well and scored a memorable goal on the last match day, which allowed the Sicilians to equalize against Roma at the Massimino and avoid relegation.
In 2008/09 El Malaka (his nickname) scored 8 goals. This was increased to 9 during the last season which saw him being very consistent. Amongst his great feats is the goal against Inter during the 3-1 home victory against the nerazzurri.
Martinez has already scored twice against Juventus, both goals at the Olimpico: one from a corner cross during the penultimate match day of the championship and another from a penalty during the Catania victory on the 20th December 2009. Often called up with the national team, with which he can boast of 15 caps, he was selected by coach Oscar Washington Tabarez for the World Cup in South Africa.
